God Will Provide
Money is stressful. For some, the uncertainty of having enough money leads to constant worry and anxiety. For others, it is a topic that has led to the worst fights in their relationships. Finances can be frustrating, but God wants to help. One of the very first revealed names of God comes from the book of Genesis where Abraham calls God “Jehovah Jireh” which means “The Lord will provide” (Genesis 22:14, New International Version). One of the key ways God wants you to know Him is that He is your provider. Yet, even though He desires to be our provider, many people struggle to experience His provision because they refuse to trust Him with their finances. This does not mean you need to become poor or be taken advantage of by churches that misuse funds. But what it does mean is that if you want the peace that comes from trusting God that God will meet your every need, you are going to need to trust Him with your finances.
Reasons People Do Not Trust God with Their Finances
Before we explore why it is important to trust God with your finances, I want to share a few reasons why people do not trust Him with their finances.
Waste and Misuse
A common topic that comes up when talking to people about church is they will claim that all churches want to do is take their money. They fear that the church will misuse their funds, use them for the pastor’s own personal interests, or spend it on items that they disagree with, all while failing to help those who are actually in need. So instead, they will choose to either not attend church at all, or at least refuse to tithe to their church. Now, unfortunately, this misuse of funds is probably true in some churches and from some televangelists. Do your research. But do not let the mistakes of others keep you from experience the joy of trusting God with your finances.
Worried They Won’t Have Enough
Others fail to trust God because they are worried that they will not have enough left over for what they need. They know that God has called them to tithe and be generous with others, yet fear over their own needs keeps them from trusting God. They can struggle with doubts that God will actually be their provider, or that He may help others but they need to help themselves. Whatever it may be, it keeps them from the peace that comes from trusting God with their finances.
Reasons You Should Trust God with Your Finances
Where Your Treasure Is There Your Heart Is Also
Perhaps the biggest reason you need to trust God with your finances and be generous with others is that it reveals the health of your heart. Jesus teaches that, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21, NIV). It can seem fine to just attend church without giving. You may believe it has no impact on your relationship with God. But what Jesus is telling you here is that your heart will go where your treasure is. If you store your treasures up with God, by giving to those in need and tithing to His church, then your heart will be with Him. But, if your treasure is stored away in a bank where no one can benefit from it but you, your heart will be locked away in the bank with it. By choosing to trust God with your finances, you do not just reap the benefits of Him meeting your needs, but you also reap the benefit of increasing God’s presence, peace, and joy in your life.
He Will Multiply It
I have heard it said that when you trust your finances to God by tithing 10%, you are letting God know you trust that He can do more with 90%, than what you can do with 100%. Malachi 3 puts it this way: “’Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it’” (Malachi 3:10, NIV). This verse is a promise to you from God. When you trust Him with your finances, He says that He will pour out blessings upon you. When you trust God with your finances, you are no longer limited by what is in your wallet, but rather by what is in His.
He Will Credit It to Your Account
In the book of Philippians, Paul talks about how he had extended an opportunity for the church at Philippi to give to help others in need. However, what he says is rather surprising. He writes, “Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account” (Philippians 4:17, NIV). What he is saying is that God does not need your money. The Church will survive even if you do not give anything to anyone, because God will make sure that they have enough to fulfill His mission. But what God does is He offers us an opportunity to partner with Him. By trusting God with your finances by being generous and tithing, it is an opportunity to add to your account, not His.
How To Trust God With Your Finances
Steward Your Money Well
Before we wrap up, here are three simple steps to help you trust God with your finances. Everything you have has been given by God. If you have given your life to Christ, it is all His. But He has entrusted it to you for you to steward it well. Take the time to create a budget. There are lots of online tools available to help you do this. Make sure you begin putting money into your savings account, paying off your debts, and if you have more left over you can begin looking into how you can wisely invest your finances. God has entrusted you with what you have, and even if it is little, He promises that if you are faithful with the little things, He can trust you with the large things (Luke 16:10).
Be Generous
Give to those in need. Share with those who have less than you. You have opportunities to be generous every day. Paul exhorts the Corinthians, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7, NIV). God loves when you give cheerfully. Find new ways to be generous and help others with that which God has blessed you.
Commit to Tithing
While being generous and stewarding your money well are ultimately decisions made by you, when you tithe you are showing the you trust God to further His purposes through His church. Unfortunately, again, some churches have not handled this well, but if you never give control of your money away, you will never be able to fully experience the fullness of peace and provision that comes from trusting God with your finances.
Opportunity to Give
Here at Revelation Church STL, your donations can help reach the lost and spread the message of Jesus Christ across the world. We trust that God will provide for this church start-up whether you decide to be a partner with us or not. But we believe that this is an opportunity to add credit to your account. It is an opportunity to be a part of multiplying God’s mission across the earth by furthering the reach of His Church. Would you consider partnering with us as an act of trusting God with your finances? We fully believe that God will not just meet your needs, but will fully bless you without enough room to store it as you trust Him in your finances.
